Managing Health Through Lifestyle
At The Natural Way Northern NSW, we recognise how serious diabetes can be and how strongly lifestyle choices affect its development and management. Owner Tama Ballantine brings 20 years of holistic health experience, supported by over 45 years of company history, to help both men and women make lasting changes. With a personalised approach to diet, weight management, and natural therapies, we aim to reduce risk factors, improve energy, and support better long-term health outcomes. Free consultations are available to create an individualised plan for prevention and management of diabetes.
How We Can Help With Diabetes
Diabetes is a disease growing at almost epidemic proportions. In most cases, it is linked to being overweight and too sedentary, which makes weight management vital for prevention. Diabetes occurs when the body does not produce, or properly use, insulin. Insulin is essential for allowing glucose (sugar) to enter the cells to be used as energy. Carbohydrates are the main fuel source for glucose production in the body. While protein and fats can also provide energy, carbohydrates trigger the most significant insulin response.
How the Body Normally Uses Carbohydrates
When you eat carbohydrate-rich foods, they are broken down into glucose and released into the bloodstream. Glucose cannot enter the body’s cells on its own—it needs insulin as the “key” to unlock the cell doors. When blood glucose rises, the pancreas releases insulin, allowing glucose to move into the cells and provide energy.
What Happens with Diabetes
In diabetes, this system fails in one of two ways:
- Type 1 Diabetes – The pancreas produces little or no insulin.
- Type 2 Diabetes – The body’s cells become resistant to insulin, so glucose cannot enter effectively.
As a result, glucose remains in the bloodstream instead of being absorbed by the cells. Type 1 diabetes is far less common, making up only 10–15% of cases, and is classified as an autoimmune condition with possible genetic links. Type 2 diabetes, however, is strongly associated with lifestyle habits such as poor diet, inactivity, and excess weight.
Health Risks Linked to Diabetes
A diagnosis of diabetes increases the risk of several health problems:
- Heart: High blood pressure, high cholesterol, blood clotting issues, and heart failure
- Eyes: Retinopathy, glaucoma, cataracts
- Nervous System: Strokes, impotence, foot ulcers, risk of amputations
- Kidneys: Renal disease
Recognising Symptoms of Diabetes
Diabetes is diagnosed through urine and blood tests, but symptoms can indicate the need for further testing. These may develop suddenly (Type 1) or gradually over years (Type 2). Watch for:
- Increased thirst and hunger
- Frequent urination
- Unusual fatigue
- Infections
- Blurred vision
- Cramps or burning sensations in the feet and legs
- Unexplained weight loss
- Nausea or vomiting
- Slow-healing sores
Can Diabetes Be Cured?
- Type 2 Diabetes: With sensible lifestyle changes, many sufferers are able to reverse the diagnosis. Since obesity increases insulin resistance, losing weight, improving diet, and exercising regularly can normalise blood glucose levels, reduce or eliminate the need for medication, and relieve diabetic symptoms.
- Type 1 Diabetes: Unfortunately, there is currently no cure. However, weight management and healthy lifestyle habits are still essential for overall wellbeing and longevity.
